Iran unveils a new cruise missile with a range of about a thousand kilometers

The Iranian authorities have announced on Tuesday the deployment of new cruise missiles within the Navy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, weapons that have a range of about a thousand kilometers and can be launched from platforms on land, sea and air.

The missile, named ‘Abu Mahdi’, was presented during a ceremony attended by the Iranian Defense Minister, Mohamad Reza Ashtiani; the commander of the Revolutionary Guard Army, Alireza Tangsiri; and the deputy commander of the Iranian Navy, Hamzé Ali Kaviani.

The missile has received this name in honor of Abu Mahdi al Muhandis, then ‘number two’ of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) – a coalition of Iraqi pro-government militias supported by Iran -, killed in a US bombardment in January 2020 in Iraq that also killed Qasem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

During the event, Tangsiri extolled that “the ‘Abu Mahdi’ missile can be fired from inside Iran.” “The missile has a double tracker and is successful against the enemy’s electronic warfare,” she said, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

Tangsiri has assured that, due to the missile’s range, enemy ships would have to move more than a thousand kilometers from the coast, while stressing that “it is very difficult to detect.”
