Accidents in the most dangerous corridors fell 14%

During the mid-year holiday period, the country’s roads see an increase in passenger flow.

This implies that the number of accidents in the corridors will also increase, for which the Ministry of Transportation, the National Road Safety Agency, the Superintendence of Transportation and the Traffic and Transportation Directorate of the Police carried out a strategy to reduce the volume of deaths on this date.

These entities reported that for this year this number fell by 14% in the six road corridors that were prioritized by the authorities due to their high flow and that during the last five years they have been the ones with the highest accident rate.

“During the holiday season we achieved a 14% reduction in deaths due to road accidents in the 6 prioritized corridors, in four of them the indicators indicate the reduction in the cases of fatalities and in the Briceño- Tunja-Sogamoso and Malla Vial del Valle del Cauca and Cauca roads an increase of 33% and 36% was registered, respectively”, exposed William Camargo, Minister of Transportation.

During these dates, Sensitization was carried out on the roads and with the presence of the Police, subpoenas were also carried out.

According to the report, 236 fines were imposed mainly for not obeying traffic signs (157), overtaking vehicles in prohibited areas (43) and dangerous maneuvers (17).

In addition, behaviors such as speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or other psychoactive substances were identified. “After this successful result, we will carry out follow-up and evaluations to modify the action plan and add new ideas for the lives of all of our Colombians”affirmed Lina Huari Mateus, general director (e) of the National Road Safety Agency.

According to the figures of the entities that were part of this strategy, the greatest falls in the accident rate occurred in the corridors of Santana – Mocoa – Neiva, with a drop of 50%; followed by the Medellin Oriente Highway Development with a 35% reduction. Armenia – Pereira – Manizales with 24% and Ruta del Sol – Sector 3 with 17%.

Nevertheless, there were other regions in which an increase was experienced, as was the case of the Malla Vial del Valle del Cauca and Cauca roads, which experienced an increase of 36% and Briceño-Tunja-Sogamoso, in the department of Boyacá, a corridor in which there were increases of 33%.

With respect to those involved in the accidents, the authorities reported that the most significant contraction occurred in automobiles, whose figure fell by 47%.

In the case of motorcyclists involveds in these claims there was also a reduction, although less important, of 17%.

In the case of pedestrians, for their part, no relevant difference was found in the number of deaths registered with respect to the mid-year vacation of 2022.

“We thank the different road actors for responding to the call of the traffic authorities, achieving good behavior on the different roads to reduce the accident rate,” said Oscar Andrés Lamprea Pinzón, director of Transit and Police Transportation.
