On Tuesday, July 11, a group of officials from the Jalisco State Attorney General’s Office and members of the Tlajomulco municipal police were attacked while searching for bodies of presumed missing persons.
The attack caused the death of six people and injured at least twelve more, between state and civil authorities, and it occurred when the investigative group was traveling along a dirt road to verify an anonymous complaint about the existence of an alleged clandestine grave on the outskirts of Tlajomulco, a town in Jalisco, in central-western Mexico. .
According to information from UN Committee against Enforced Disappearancethe group was ambushed by unidentified assailantswhich used explosive devices.
The committee condemned strongly condemned the attack and offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
Jalisco, the state with the most disappearances
Official data indicates that more than 110,000 people have disappeared in Mexicowith the highest number of documented disappearances in the state of Jalisco.
The Committee visited the North American country in 2022 and at the end of said mission published a report urging the country to ensure permanent protection of the public servants dedicated to the search and investigation and to establish a comprehensive program for their security.
In this regard, he once again called on Mexico to urgently adopt and implement a National Policy for the Prevention and Eradication of Disappearances.
He also urged Mexico to immediately strengthen the victim protection system to ensure the safety of their families and companions.
After the attack in Tlajomulco, the Committee recalled that searches and investigations are an indelible obligation of its States parties, for which reason it urged Mexico to undertake prompt, thorough and diligent investigation to identify those responsible, prosecute them and impose the pertinent sanctions.
