The United States government has been “deeply shocked” by the death of opposition leader Oleg Jorzhan, opposition leader of the Moldovan independence region of Transnistria, whose lifeless body appeared on Monday at his home near the capital, Tiraspol.
The Office of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor of the United States Department of State has called in a statement on the social network Twitter for an impartial investigation into his death.
“Deeply shocked by the murder of political activist Oleg Jorzhan in the Transnistria region. His murder came seven months after serving an unjust sentence of more than four years in prison,” the US office said.
The Transnistrian Ministry of Interior reported that the body of Jorzhan, leader of the Transnistrian Communist Party, showed signs of violence in front of an open safe. The Investigation Committee has already launched the corresponding investigations to clarify what happened.
Jorzhan was sentenced by the Transnistrian Justice to four years and six months in prison for “violent actions against a public figure” after cooperating with the national authorities of Moldova.
The Moldovan Court of Justice declared the sentence illegal in the summer of 2020. Finally, Jorzhan was released in December 2022, according to information collected by the Moldovan agency Moldpres.
