At least 41 injured after an explosion due to the possible gas leak from a pipe on a street in South Africa

July 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 41 people have been injured this Wednesday night after an explosion caused by a possible gas leak from a pipe on a street in Johannesburg (South Africa).

Among the injured there are two in critical condition, nine serious and 30 with minor injuries, as reported by the head of the Government of the province of Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, in statements collected by the South African newspaper ‘News24’.

One of the first measures that the authorities have taken is the closure of the streets adjacent to the site of the explosion and the evacuation of the residents of the area, some of whom have presented headaches, chest pains and difficulty breathing.

The explosion, whose causes are still not entirely clear, has left a “big hole” in the road, for which Lesufi himself has assured that it is “a miracle” that there are no deaths.

Although it is believed that the explosion could have been caused by a gas leak from a pipe, the gas company Epoli Gas has assured that its pipes are working, and that the explosion itself caused a “minimum” leak from a pipe that already has been repaired.
