The deputy prime minister of Poland, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, assured this Tuesday that the war in Georgia – which will be fifteen years old in August – was “the first act of aggression by post-communist Russia” against a sovereign and independent state.

In the framework of a conference on the anniversary of the war in Georgia, Kaczynski recalled that that aggression had a forceful “reaction” from the countries in the area, led by Poland and his late brother, then President Lech Kaczynski.

“He decided not to limit himself to statements and to take action, an action that involved a joint expedition of the presidents of Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to Tbilisi to show full loyalty and prove that the presidents of these countries are not afraid of Russia.” Kaczynski asserted.

The Polish deputy prime minister has praised the leadership of that generation of European presidents and recalled that his brother then formulated the well-known phrase: “First Georgia, then Ukraine, then maybe the Baltic States, and then maybe it’s time for Poland”.

“This prophecy, unfortunately, has come true,” Kaczynski lamented, praising the resistance of the Ukrainian people, who have been facing the Russian invasion for more than 500 days, according to the Polish news agency PAP.
