The Israeli Army has appointed Sharon Itach this Monday as its first military attaché in Morocco, amid the strengthening of security ties between the two countries after the agreement to normalize their relations, reached at the end of 2020.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have published on its website a list with the appointment of 22 people as Army commanders in charge of various functions on the recommendation of the Chief of General Staff, Herzi Halevi, and awaiting ratification by the Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Itach, of Moroccan origin, currently heads the Interior Central Command for the Haifa district, while in the pass he headed the 489th Search and Rescue Battalion, as reported by the Israeli newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
The appointment comes about a month after a group of Israeli soldiers actively participated in international exercises in Moroccan territory, which is the first time they have joined these exercises.
The agreement between Israel and Morocco to normalize relations was reached in December 2020, shortly after the Israeli government signed a similar pact with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain, within the framework of the ‘Abraham Accords’. Subsequently, Sudan joined them, although it has not ratified them.
