Cargo plane crashes in northern Greece

July 17 () –

A Ukrainian cargo plane has crashed on Saturday night in the Antifilippi area, in northern Greece, on a commercial trip from Serbia, which was bound for Jordan.

During the flight, the engine failed and the pilot tried to land at Kavala airport, a coastal city in northern Greece.

However, the engine has caught fire and the plane has crashed between the towns of Antifilippi and Palaiochori, about 50 kilometers away from the airport, the newspaper ‘Kavala Post’ reported.

After the accident, there have been several explosions.

The aircraft, an Antonov-12, had a crew of eight people and “twelve tons of dangerous cargo,” according to the ERT channel.

After 01:00 local time (00:00 Spanish peninsular time), the authorities have ordered the residents of the surroundings of the accident site to move away due to the “dangerous and toxic vapors” emitted by the aircraft.

A representative of Civil Protection, in statements to ERT, has reported that they are carrying out the evacuation of all people, including Firefighters, Police and rescue teams, since there is concern about the nature of the cargo.
