Arancha González Laya, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs, will give a keynote address at ECLAC

The Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) of the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), Arancha González Laya, will give a keynote address on Monday, July 24, 2023 at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) in Santiago, Chile, where she will be received by the Executive Secretary of the regional organization of the United Nations, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs. The conference will inaugurate a cycle of Keynote Lectures organized within the framework of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of ECLAC.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain will offer at 11:00 local time (UTC/GMT -4:00) a magisterial conference entitled “Globalization, regionalization and the challenges of economic integration in Latin America and the Caribbean”.

Arancha González Laya was Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the International Trade Center, an international organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, promoted jointly by the United Nations and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Between 2005 and 2013 she was Chief of Staff of the Director General of the WTO, Pascal Lamy, and his representative (Sherpa) in the G-20.

Previously, he held various positions at the European Commission in the field of external relations, where, among other efforts, he supported developing countries in their efforts to promote trade and development. Between 2002 and 2004, she was the spokesperson for the European Commission for trade and adviser to the European Union Commissioner for Trade.

A Spanish national, she has a law degree from the University of Navarra and a postgraduate degree in European Law from the Carlos III University of Madrid.

The commemoration of ECLAC’s 75th anniversary includes the online launch of a special website that reviews the origins of the organization, the evolution of its thinking and current institutional priorities. The website offers a photographic selection of illustrious visitors, staff and the ECLAC building -considered a landmark of modern Latin American architecture-, as well as other information resources on this United Nations regional commission.

The media are invited to attend this keynote address, which will be held in the Raúl Prebisch Room at ECLAC headquarters (Av. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura, Santiago, Chile).
