July 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –
A court in Iran has sentenced a prominent university professor to one year in prison on Wednesday for “disseminating unproven statements and content”, in relation to the criticism leveled by the academic, linked to reformist politicians, against the authorities.
According to information collected by the Iranian news portal Mizan, linked to Iran’s judicial apparatus, the man, Sadeq Zibakalam, 75, has been convicted of “causing psychological insecurity in society” with his “unproven” statements.
The sentence can still be appealed by the lawyers of Zibakalam, a university professor who has been cited on several occasions by foreign media to address the political and social situation in the Central Asian country. Despite his closeness to reformist politicians, various activists have accused him of being close to the government.
At the moment there are no details about Zibakalam’s statements that would have led to the filing of charges against him, although the trial is taking place within the framework of the processes for the protests unleashed in September after the death in custody of the young Kurdish- Iranian Mahsa Amini, detained in Tehran for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.
