Honor Magic V2: the best of traditional phones with the best of folding phones

Honor Magic V2 Ultimate Black

a folding that does not look like a foldable. Honor wants to improve Huawei’s trail to offer a phone that has a friendly aspect ratio when closed, and all the benefits of a foldable to use when open. This objective has been achieved, by far, with the new Honor Magic V2, a high-end animal that wants to be the new reference in its segment. Honor has invited us and we already have some first impressions of this phone. Spoiler alert: it’s brutal.

These are the features and specifications of the Honor Magic V2 of a phone born to reign among foldables, and that wants to conquer those users who have not yet been seduced by the format.

The foldable that wanted to be a standard phone

Aspect Ratio 20:9. It has taken years for folding to begin to have a “normal” format. This phone, when closed, has a “small” 6.43-inch panel, LTPO-type OLED and with variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. A great victory for those who do not want an extremely long format, like the one that gives life its main direct rival.

Both panels are OLED, of the LTPO type and with a very high DC Dimming. The brightness of the exterior panel is 2,500 nits, a record figure in folding

The interior panel is somewhat more common, although share technologies. It should be noted that both panels, the 6.43-inch panel and the 7.92-inch panel share a DC Dimming of 3840Hz, the highest at the moment. This technology refers to how many blinks per second the panel will have and, at a higher rate, less blinking, with the consequent improvement in visual fatigue.

The hinge is covered by titanium, and Honor promises that it supports more than 400,000 openings. We are talking about 10 years of operation if we fold and unfold it 100 times a day: a promising useful life.

No hardware has been spared with this device: it has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (the first foldable with this SoC), 12 GB of RAM configurations accompanied by 256, 512 GB or 1 TB and a 5,000mAh battery with 66W fast charging and a breakthrough.

Silicon and carbon batteries have broken into mobile phones with one purpose: to catapult their autonomy

This phone does not have the classic lithium battery: it debuts silicon-carbon technology. We recommend you read our piece dedicated to this technology, but the summary is that this solution allows you to obtain the same capacity in less volume. That is why it has a 5,000mAh battery (larger than usual) despite being one of the smallest foldables on the market. It remains to be seen the performance and degradation (minor a priori), but the leap to this technology is always good news.

Triple camera and Android 13

Honor Magic V2 Silver

At the photographic level, Honor has not wanted to leave anything in the pipeline either. We find a triple camera setup, with optical stabilization on both the main sensor and the telephoto lens. The main sensor and the ultra wide angle are of 50 megapixelswhile telephoto is 20.

The selfie camera is double 16 megapixels: one on the outer screen and one on the inner screen. From the camera configuration, we can intuit that this phone aspires to be one of the candidates for the best photographic foldable. It is a doubt that we will clear up in the in-depth review.

The software is signed by Honor with the latest version of Magic UI, based on Android 13. It is software that will come with Google services when it lands in Europe, so it competes with any rival in this regard.

Versions and price of the Honor Magic V2

At the moment, we do not know the official price for Europe of this Honor Magic V2. The previous model, the Magic Vs, landed in Spain at a price of 1,599 euros with somewhat lower hardware, so we can expect (except for surprise) a similar or somewhat higher figure for this new iteration.

The standard versions will be 16 + 256/512 GB, finished in ‘silk black’, ‘gold’ and ‘silk purple’ colours. In the same way, note that there will be an “Ultimate” version with 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage and finished in vegan leather. In China, the exchange prices are as follows:

  • Honor Magic V2 16GB+256GB | 8,999 CNY, 1136 euros to change.
  • Honor Magic V2 16GB+512GB | 9,999 CNY, 1262 euros to change
  • Honor Magic V2 Ultimate 16GB + 1TB | 11,999 CNY, 1514 euros to change
