The Congolese Labor Party (PCT) led by the president of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, has obtained the majority of the 154 seats in Parliament in the first round of the legislative elections on July 10, in results questioned by associations opposition civilians.

According to the Congolese electoral system, the candidates who obtain an absolute majority in their constituencies are automatically elected, while the rest must be measured in the second round on July 24.

Sassou Nguesso’s party, which already had 101 seats in the outgoing assembly, would have won 103 positions elected by majority, including those corresponding to the capital, Brazzaville, according to the Minister of Territorial Administration, Guy Georges Mbaka, in an appearance collected by Radio France Internationale (RFI).

Allies such as the Group for Democracy and Social Progress (RDPS), the Movement for Action and Renewal (MAR) and the Club 2002-PUR (Party for Unity and the Republic) won 13 seats.

In contrast, the civil society coalition Tourons la Page (Turn the page) claims to have observed “traps, fraud and scenarios of open corruption”, and asked the Constitutional Court to take into account their demands before validating the final result of the elections. . “We have to restart with the foundations of democracy,” Roch Euloge Nzobo, the organization’s head of communications, assured RFI.


Sassou Nguesso was re-elected in the 2021 elections after collecting 88.4 percent of the votes, according to the results ratified by the Constitutional Court, which rejected the appeals filed by the opposition after the elections, marked by death. by coronavirus of the president’s main rival a day after the vote.

The 78-year-old president came to power in 1979 and remained in office until 1992, when he was defeated at the polls. However, he returned to the Presidency as a result of the insurgent forces that he himself led in the 1997 civil war, without ever since leaving his position.
