The UN calls to protect journalists after the new murder of a communicator in Mexico

Luis Martín Sánchez Íñiguez was a journalist correspondent for La Jornadaone of the main national newspapers in Mexico.

On Wednesday night, July 5, it was disappeared from home in Xalisco, a municipality adjacent to Tepic, the capital coastal city of the state of Nayarit in the Mexican Pacific.

later on saturday July 8, the body of Sánchez Íñiguez appeared in the town of El Ahuacate, in Tepic, according to the State Attorney General’s Office. Press reports state that the body was bound by the hands and that it had a message on it.

Sánchez Íñiguez is the third correspondent for La Jornada assassinated since 2017.

The Mexico Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned in the strongest terms the disappearance and murder of Sánchez Íñiguez, which adds to a series of crimes against the press in Mexico. With his, there are four journalists murdered in the country so far this year.

The UN Office indicated that the Prosecutor’s Office must consider the journalistic work of Sánchez Íñiguez as the main line of research.

The case of Sánchez Íñiguez was not the only attack against journalists in Nayarit in recent days: two local media collaborators, Osiris Maldonado de la Paz and Jonathan Lora Ramírez, were also disappeared between July 3 and 7 in the same area. Lora could be located alive and in good health on July 8.

In a statement, the agency stressed that efforts should be redoubled search for the informant still missingunder the presumption that he is still alive.

Coordinated work of the authorities

The Office of the High Commissioner asked authorities at all levels to work in a coordinated manner to ensure the protection of the journalistic union of Nayarit.

He also urged the undertaking of a prompt, thorough, independent and effective investigation to fully clarify the facts and punish all those responsible.

Finally, the Office of the High Commissioner offered its condolences to the family and friends of Sánchez Íñiguez, as well as to all journalists in Mexico.
