July 10 () –

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has highlighted the “historic” agreement announced this Monday to lift Turkey’s veto on Sweden’s entry into NATO.

“A historic step in Vilnius. I welcome this important step that Turkey has promised to take to ratify Sweden’s accession to NATO,” Von der Leyen posted on Twitter.

The High Representative of the EU’s Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has reacted along the same lines. “Today a historic step has been taken in Vilnius. Sweden’s path to NATO is open!”, he exclaimed.

“This is good news for the Swedish people and for our common security and defense policy. A strong NATO makes Europe safer,” he added.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has also expressed his satisfaction with the pact. “Good news from Vilnius,” Michel publishes, echoing the announcement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Twitter.
