The Peruvian authorities ordered the closure of more than 60% of the ports on the Pacific coast of Peru on Thursday due to the fact that the waves presented a height of up to twice their normal estimate.
Civil Defense indicated in a statement that activities were suspended in 76 of the total 121 ports, after the Navy’s hydrography and navigation department detected moderately intense waves produced by strong winds in the Pacific Ocean.
Local television cameras showed up to three sea lions stranded on the coast of the capital, as well as small stones scattered on a road next to the Pacific of Lima.
The authorities also recommended withdrawing small fleets to the mainland and avoiding sports and recreational activities, as well as camping near beach areas.
The Navy estimated that the waves could continue until July 10 and that they usually appear in the winter season of the South Pacific that began on June 21.
