July 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United States Department of Defense announced late this past Friday a military aid project for Taiwan estimated at around 110 million euros in an initiative that could once again strain relations with China, which has been claiming for decades its sovereignty over the territory.
This is an item that includes spare parts for tanks and combat vehicles, as well as technical and logistical support from both the US government and contractors, and has been managed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA, for its acronym in English), the branch of the department specialized in the management of military contracts.
This item is intended to “maintain Taiwan’s vehicles, small arms, combat weapon systems, and logistical support items,” to “improve its ability to respond to current and future threats,” and “further strengthen its relationship with the United States and other allies,” according to the official DSCA statement.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense has expressed this Saturday its gratitude for the approval of the game, which could be finalized before the end of the month, if the Congress gives its final approval.
Once the Legislature gives its approval, it will be the fifth arms sale to Taiwan since US President Joe Biden took office and, like the previous four, is covered by the US-Taiwan Relations Act, recalls the official agency of Taiwanese news CNA.
