Yoon Suk Yeol assesses the US-Korea alliance

President Yoon Suk Yeol of the Republic of Korea issued a reflective message on the horrors of the Korean War during a visit to a memorial exhibition in Seoul. The event marked the 70th anniversary of the bilateral alliance between South Korea and the United States.

Accompanied by First Lady Kim Keon Hee, President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the National Museum of Contemporary History of Korea to attend the commemorative exhibition. In greeting those present, the president stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices and dedication of war heroes from both Korea and the United States.

During his speech, Yoon mentioned US President Truman’s decision 73 years ago to intervene in the Korean War to defend South Korea. He pointed out that there are still missing soldiers from both countries and vowed to do everything possible to reunite these heroes with their families.

President Yoon stressed the importance of “accurately informing future generations about the remarkable beginnings and achievements of the South Korea-US alliance.” He expressed his hope that the commemorative exhibition would be an opportunity for people to reflect on the value and meaning of this alliance.

Presenting the key history of the Korea-US alliance, the exhibition includes the presence of 10 war veterans, the description of the context of the time, the activities of the US Peace Corps, the Mutual Defense Treaty Korea-US, the bilateral free trade agreement and the Washington Declaration of 2023.

In addition, a Korean translation of an American trade report written by Shin Heon, a Korean diplomat and delegate to the Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between the Kingdom of Chosun (Joseon) and the United States signed in 1882, is on display for the first time A two-minute video of the signing ceremony prior to the official conclusion of the defense treaty, conducted by US Liberty News, was also released.

With this visit and his message, President Yoon Suk Yeol stresses the importance of remembering historical events and honoring those who fought in the Korean War, while emphasizing the value of the U.S.-South Korea alliance in the current context.
