Lebanon condemns the artillery attack by the Israeli Army

July 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the artillery attack carried out by the Israeli Army this Thursday against Lebanese territory after a projectile was launched from the south of the neighboring country, amid the rise in tensions between Israel and the party-militia Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah.

The ministerial portfolio, according to a statement published on its profile on the social network Twitter, has indicated that said attack is a violation of Lebanese sovereignty, for which reason it has asked the United Nations and the international community to pressure Israel “to stop their violations and aggressions, which continue at an increasing rate in the airspace and territorial waters of recent times”.

Secondly, Beirut has appealed “to countries wishing to maintain calm and stability, in South Lebanon in particular and in the Middle East in general, to be aware of the coincidence of these Israeli violations with the imminent presentation to the (UN) Security Council of the request for the extension of the work of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) operating in the south of the country”.

The Lebanese authorities consider that this coincidence is due to an attempt by Israel to “tense and disturb the atmosphere”. For this reason, they have once again called for “Israel’s immediate and unconditional withdrawal from all the Lebanese territories that it continues to occupy.”

The Israeli Army assured this Thursday that it had attacked Lebanese territory in response to a previous launch that exploded in an area adjacent to the Blue Line -the common border–, in Israeli territory. The Lebanese media have pointed to the impact of at least 15 projectiles, indicating afterwards that there is “complete calm”.

The incident took place amid rising tensions on the border after Hezbollah set up two tents in June containing armed people at Shebaa Farms, occupied by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War. and later annexed. Syria and Lebanon claim the territory belongs to them.

On the other hand, Hezbollah has charged against Israel for its decision to build a wall around the city of Ghajar, located in the Golan Heights, which it has described as “a provocation” to “try to impose a new ‘status quo’ in area”.
