July 7 () –
At least nine people have died and 42 people have been injured, including three children, in an attack by Russian forces against a residential building in the Ukrainian city of Lviv, in the west of the country, near the border with Poland.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Interior has confirmed the new balance in a statement on its official Telegram account, in which it has also reported that search and rescue operations continue.
For his part, the mayor of Lviv, Andrei Sadovi, indicated that “the street (…) will be closed until the emergency workers remove the rubble and remove all the dead” and has qualified that around 60 apartments and 50 cars have been damaged.
After this information, the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, published a video of the attack in which “the consequences of the night attack by Russian terrorists” are seen. “Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded (…) There will definitely be a response to the enemy. A forceful one,” he asserted.
For her part, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, Denise Brown, condemned the attack and stressed that “Humanitarian Law is clear: civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected,” according to a statement published by her office.
“Early this morning in Lviv, some explosions have woken me up. Another attack by the Russian Armed Forces has caused injuries and deaths while their houses suffered serious damage in a shelling when they were also sleeping,” he lamented.
In this sense, he recalled that “today’s attack comes only a week after the deadly attack in Kramatorsk and the recent bombings in Kharkov, Sumy and other regions of Ukraine, which have caused loss and destruction to people who continue to live through the Horrors of Russia’s Full-Scale War Against Ukraine”.
“The UN and the humanitarian community will continue to support the people of Ukraine. On behalf of the United Nations and the humanitarian community, I convey my sincere condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Brown added.
