The Government of Saudi Arabia has asked the Sudanese authorities to stop “the military escalation” in the conflict between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since mid-April.
Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Eljereiji met on Wednesday with Sudan’s transition minister Ali al Sadiq in a meeting on the sidelines of a summit of the Coordination Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Azerbaijan.
“During the meeting, they have discussed recent developments (in the conflict) in Sudan and ways to support all political solutions, restore calm and stop the military escalation in a way that guarantees the security and stability of Sudan and its people. “, says a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry.
Saudi Arabia and the United States have been mediators in the conflict, agreeing to ceasefire agreements with the aim of allowing humanitarian assistance to enter the African country. However, these ceasefires were not respected, since both the RSF and the Army accused each other of failing to comply with them.
The current hostilities between the Army and the RSF broke out in the context of an increase in tensions around the integration of the paramilitary group within the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition open after the overthrow in 2019 of Omar Hasan al Bashir, damaged by the coup against Hamdok.
However, the refusal of the RSF leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias ‘Hemedti’, to the conditions of this reintegration led to tensions that caused postponements in the formation of the new transitional government.
