Zelensky calls for reinforcements
The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, asked again this Monday more air defenses to securely protect the entire Ukrainian territory, after the drone attack on Sumi.
“Unfortunately, our State still does not have enough quality air defense systems to protect all of our territory and shoot down all enemy targets“Zelensky said in his address to the nation last night.
Zelensky added that “the enemy takes advantage” of it, and pledged to “do everything possible and impossible to make our air defense system stronger.”
While the Ukrainian Air Force is capable of shooting down almost all of the drones and missiles that Russia fires at Kiev, where Ukraine has concentrated the best defensive systems received from the West, many of the missiles that Russian forces fire at other areas they cannot be intercepted.
“The goal is for the Ukrainian air shield to be able to protect our entire territory from Russian terror and in the future to become the basis for the European air shield,” Zelensky said of his efforts to their partners send more modern protection systems to Ukraine.
According to the head of the Sumi Military Administration, Dmitro Zhevitsky, the anti-aircraft alarms that announce the possibility of attacks did not sound when the Shahed drones that caused Monday’s tragedy were flying into the city.
“This tragedy could and should have been avoided,” Zhevitsky said of what happened, which seems to show the shortcomings of Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems in some particularly exposed regions such as Sumi, which is located near the border with Russia.
