Nigeria imposes a curfew in the east of the country due to clashes that left dozens dead

July 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The governor of the Nigerian state of Taraba, Agbu Kefas, declared a 24-hour curfew this Sunday, after the security situation worsened due to community clashes that have left dozens dead.

According to Kefas spokesman Yusuf Sanda, the decision was made after reviewing the security situation in the communities. Thus, he has ordered residents to comply with the ordinance and has asked security agencies to enforce the curfew.

The Taraba Police spokesman, Usman Abdulaji, pointed out hours before that the crisis began during the early hours of Saturday, but indicated that the exact number of fatalities is unknown, according to the Nigerian newspaper ‘Punch’.

The incidents have occurred specifically in the Karim Lamido area, the scene of attacks between karimjo and wurkun militias. The spokesman has confirmed at least two deaths but the figure could be higher because at least five villages in the area – Garin Marwa, Sarkin Kudu, Sallamin Kala and Yashi Pena – have been burned by the clashes.

The fighting between the two communities began last month, after the appointment of a member of the Wurkun as “monarch” of the area, according to the newspaper ‘Premium Times’.
