The Malian junta reshuffles ministries but leaves the Defense and Foreign portfolios intact

The representative of the influential Azawad movement leaves his Industry portfolio while the military increases its presence

July 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The military junta that governs Mali has remodeled more than a dozen ministries although it has left the Defense, Justice or Foreign portfolios intact at a time when the country has just approved a constitutional referendum and applauded the end of the peace mission of the UN on its territory.

According to Radio France Internationale analysts, this remodeling slightly increases the presence of the military in the Council of Ministers with appointments such as Colonel Assa Badiallo Touré, until now adviser to the coup leader and now “president”, Assimi Goita.

Among the new appointees there is a woman, Bintou Camara, who will hold the post of Minister of Energy and Water. An experienced banker, Musa Alassane Diallo, will occupy the Industry and Commerce portfolio, according to the complete list collected by the aBamako news portal.

The arrival of the latter means the departure from the portfolio of an emblematic figure such as Mohamud Ould Mohamed, representative of the High Council for Azawad Unity, the main armed force in the northern region of Kidal, in the midst of a recent upturn in the tensions between the movement and the military junta.

This is the first reshuffle of the cabinet led by the Prime Minister, Choguel Maiga, carried out by Colonel Goita since he took power on June 7, 2021.
