Rains in western Japan leave one dead and two missing

July 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Heavy rains in western Japan have left at least one person dead and two residents missing due to landslides and flooded roads.

Authorities have reported that an elderly man was pulled from a car submerged in a ditch in the city of Yamaguchi this Saturday morning, but they have only been able to confirm his death, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.

Seven vehicles were submerged on a flooded road in the city of Mine, in Yamaguchi prefecture, and six of the drivers have been rescued, but police continue to search for the only driver who could not be located.

In Yufu city, Oita prefecture, local officials have reported that a house was destroyed by a landslide and a resident could not be located.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has urged caution over the danger of further landslides and flooding, as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected across much of western and eastern Japan through July 2.
