The Brazilian electoral court reached this Friday the necessary majority to leave the ex-far-right president Jair Bolsonaro ineligible for eight years for “abuse of power”, while the vote of two judges remains, who could request a postponement of the end of the trial.
In this way, Bolsonaro will not be able to contest the next municipal, state government or President of the Republic elections until 2030, when he will be 75 years old. The decision can be appealed and does not imply criminal consequences for the former president of Brazil.
The Court considers that Bolsonaro committed abuse of power and improper use of the media on July 18, 2022 when he brought together several ambassadors from various countries to affirm, without providing evidence, that the electronic ballot boxes used in the elections could be the object of fraud. .
In addition, the judges have taken into account other statements by Bolsonaro and the environment he created that led his followers to attack the main government buildings in Brasilia on January 8 of this year in a coup attempt.
