64 arrested in Brussels, most of them minors

The Brussels police arrested 64 people early Thursday morningmost of them minors, during the riots in the Belgian capital over the death of a young man in Nanterre (France) by a shot by the police as he tried to flee from a checkpoint.

The local police in Brussels assured on Friday morning that 48 of the detainees are minors. As stated in the newspaper le soir“immediate steps were taken to bring order.”

During the day on Thursday, calls for demonstrations and protests circulated through social networks in response to the death of the 17-year-old boy in France. The meetings ended in riots and heavy clashes that led to the diversion of public transport in various neighbourhoods.

In France, with 40,000 agents deployed in the third consecutive night of riots, at least 667 people were detained on the night from Thursday to Friday.

The clashes began last Tuesday, June 27, over the death of Näel, a 17-year-old black youth who was driving a car without a permit in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris. The policeman who killed the young man was placed in pretrial detention.

The boy died at a police checkpoint. The shock of the event has had repercussions in all areas of French society. The star player of Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Kylian Mbappé, has classified the act as “unacceptable” and feels pain for his country.

Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, has taken action against possible revivals of the riots by deploying 2,000 agents in France. He, in turn, called a crisis meeting on Wednesday June 29 to resolve the conflict.
