Canada Expands Russia Sanctions Package in Response to Ukraine Invasion

The Government of Canada has expanded its sanctions against Russia this Friday in response to the invasion of Ukraine, unleashed on February 24 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the inclusion of eight sectors in its package of restrictions.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry has published a series of amendments to the sanctions package that affects the manufacture of metals; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment; computers, electronic and optical products; electrical equipment; machinery and equipment not classified in other sectors; motor vehicles; transportation equipment; and transportation by land and pipelines.

“No person in Canada and no Canadian outside of Canada is prohibited from providing Russia or any person in Russia with a referral service … in connection with one of the specified industries,” it said in a brief statement on its website. .


In response, sources from the Russian Embassy in Canada have said that these sanctions are “totally unfounded and counterproductive”, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS. “As we have repeatedly warned, all economic sanctions are double-edged and will impact Canada,” they have settled.
