Man Wanted for Capitol Hill Storming Arrested Near Obama’s Washington Home

A man wanted for crimes related to the assault of January 6, 2021 to the United States Capitol was arrested Thursday in the Washington neighborhood where former President Barack Obama lives, police sources said.

Taylor Taranto, 37, was seen by police a few blocks from the former president’s home and fled despite being pursued by United States Secret Service agents.

Taranto has an open warrant for his arrest on charges related to the assault, two law enforcement officials said. The officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing case and spoke with Associated Press On condition of anonymity, they said Taranto also made threats on social media against a public figure.

The Metropolitan Police arrested him on charges of being a fugitive from justice. The explosives team swept away the Taranto vehicle. It is unknown what Taranto’s role would have been in the riots, where supporters of then-President Donald Trump broke windows and beat and injured police officers in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

More than 1,000 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the riots at the Capitol. More than 600 of them have pleaded guilty, while approximately 100 others have been convicted after trials decided by judges or juries. More than 550 riot advocates have been sentenced, with more than half receiving prison terms ranging from six days to 18 years.
