The new title of the series will not be the exception and today its producer has just revealed why the turn-based mechanics were scrapped and why this will apparently be the direction the franchise will take.
Naoki Yoshida recognized creative of the series final-fantasy and producer of the new installment of the main series, final fantasy xviappeared in an interview with Famitsu in the spoke of various details of the concept of the project. Among the most important aspects was the reason why final fantasy xvi scrapped turn-based battle mechanics.

Why final fantasy xvi will not have turn-based combat?
“I’m from a generation that grew up with commando and turn-based RPGs. I think I understand how interesting and immersive they can be. On the other hand, over the past decade or so I’ve seen a lot of feedback saying, ‘I don’t understand the appeal of select commands in video games,'” Yoshida commented (translation of Video Games Chronicle). “This sentiment continues to grow, particularly among younger audiences who typically don’t play RPGs.”
The creative considers that in a certain way it is a natural evolution, in the sense that turn-based games had precisely that combat dynamic due to the limitations of old systems. Today, thanks to technology, it is possible to carry out combats simultaneously without having to wait for action-by-action confrontations to take place.

“Now it’s common for players younger than me to love such games,” Yoshida said. “As a result, there seems to be no point in opting for command windows, such as ‘Fight’, to make a decision during a battle.”

“That said, I definitely think it’s possible that the next final-fantasy can use a command system again, or that it is open world”, concluded Yoshida, who made it clear that the decision that is made in the end is the one that best suits the experience that is trying to be offered.
