UNESCO is expected to accept the return of the US

Members of the UN cultural agency will meet on Thursday for the start of two days of meetings in Paris, which is expected to include a vote. to accept the return of the United States to the organization.

The United States withdrew in 2018 complaining of bias against Israel and citing mismanagement at the agency.

Before he left, the US was UNESCO’s largest single donor, providing around a fifth of the agency’s total funding.

US officials said earlier this month that the desire to return to UNESCO was prompted by concerns about China’s influence on policy making at the agency, particularly with regard to artificial intelligence and technology education.

As part of the proposed return plan, President Joe Biden’s administration has requested $150 million in funding for UNESCO dues and arrears from 2024.
