The police officer who shot a North African minor was sent to preventive detention this Thursday afternoon, accused of intentional homicide. The prosecution had requested this measure in the morning, alleging that “the legal conditions for the use of the weapon” were not met.
The agent’s lawyer, Laurent-Franck Liénard, has indicated that his client is going through difficult times after having dedicated “his entire life to enforcing the law and protect the people”. In an interview with RTL, Liénard has declared that preventive detention is intended to appease the spirits of society, and that his client has not done anything wrong. “He had to fire a shot as part of his job, which is an extremely difficult decision,” he said.
The triggering event occurred on Tuesday morning, when 17-year-old Nahel M. was driving a yellow Mercedes sports car through Nanterre and committed various traffic offenses. When the police biker couple tried to stop him, the minor fled. Once he was stopped in a traffic jam, the officers pointed their weapons at the driver, demanding that he stop the engine, but Nahel started and one of the police officers fired.
The images that have circulated of these events have shown that, contrary to what the policemen initially declared, his personal integrity did not appear clearly in danger with the last escape attempt.
The event has given rise to two consecutive nights of riots in France, with at least 150 detainees last morning alone, as well as burning dozens of vehicles and public buildings such as police stations, town halls and courts.
