Morocco calls its ambassador to Sweden for consultations after an authorized burning of the Koran

It also summons the Swedish charge d’affaires in Rabat to show “the most vigorous condemnation”

June 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Moroccan Foreign Ministry has called its ambassador to Sweden, Karim Medrek, for consultations “indefinitely”, after the Swedish authorities authorized the burning of a copy of the Koran in front of a mosque in Stockholm during a demonstration.

“This new offensive and irresponsible act disregards the feelings of more than a billion Muslims, in this holy period of the great pilgrimage to Mecca and the blessed festival of Eid al Adha,” the ministry said in a statement.

In addition, the ministry has summoned the Swedish charge d’affaires in Rabat to show “the most vigorous condemnation” and the “rejection of this inadmissible act.”

“Whatever the political positions or differences that may exist between countries, the Kingdom considers it unacceptable that the faith of Muslims is mocked in this way. The principles of tolerance and the values of universalism cannot be reduced to accommodating the opinions of some, while showing so little regard for the beliefs of over a billion Muslims,” the statement read.

The controversy has come after the Swedish Police authorized the holding of a demonstration in which one of its assistants burned a copy of the Koran on Wednesday.
