At least eleven civilians have been killed and five wounded in a new attack carried out in the Sagaing region, in central Burma, by the forces of the military junta that has ruled the country since the coup on February 1, 2021. .
The authorities of the town of Pale have indicated that an Air Force plane has bombed the area and has launched at least three projectiles against a monastery and several houses.
“Seven men and three women, including a monk, have been killed by the shelling. Five residents of the area, including a two-year-old baby, have been injured,” the authorities have said in statements to the Irrawaddy news portal.
In total, some thirteen houses have been destroyed. Several residents of the area have warned that there was a “strong explosion”, while the attack has led part of the citizens to abandon their homes.
Myanmar has been plunged into a serious crisis since the February 2021 coup. According to United Nations estimates, more than 560,000 people have been displaced by violence. The Government of National Unity declared in September 2021 “a popular defensive war” against the military junta and called on citizens “from all corners of the country” to rebel against the coup leaders who seized power.
In addition, the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners (AAPP) estimates that more than 23,600 people have been arrested since the coup, of which 19,273 are still incarcerated. In total, 3,709 people have died at the hands of the military junta, although another 4,346 have been released so far.
