US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Tuesday that Washington will announce “additional” sanctions this week against the Wagner Group in retaliation for its “destructive” activities in Africa.
“Wherever Wagner goes he brings death and destruction. (Belarusian President Alexander) Lukashenko’s decision to host (Wagner’s leader Yevgeni) Prigozhin in Belarus is another example of him choosing the interests of Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin for above the interests of the population”, he said this Tuesday at a press conference.
Miller has also stressed that he would like to see the leader of the Wagner Group in court in the United States facing the “crimes of which he is accused.” “We continue to track Wagner’s activities both in Ukraine and in Africa,” he added.
However, the State Department spokesman has not specified that the upcoming sanctions are linked to the Prigozhin revolt that took place over the weekend, which appears to have focused on the activities of the mercenary group beyond Ukraine.
The rebellion of the Wagner Group, led by Prigozhin, began late on Friday with the seizure of the Russian city of Rostov, headquarters of the southern command of the Army, with the intention of heading towards Moscow to ask the Ministry of Defense for explanations for allegedly killing his men in a bombing raid.
