June 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Israeli Army has denounced on Monday the launch of a projectile from the West Bank town of Jenin and has indicated that the shot “has not posed a threat” to the settlements located in the area, amid the upsurge in violence in recent months.
“A rocket was launched this morning from the Jenin area and exploded in Palestinian territory. The rocket did not pose a threat to the communities in the area,” the Army said through a message posted on its account on the Twitter social network.
Likewise, he stressed that “the security forces have arrived at the scene and have carried out inspections in the area”, before emphasizing that “the incident is being reviewed”. So far, no Palestinian armed group has claimed responsibility for the launch.
The firing of the projectile comes a week after the Israeli Army carried out an operation in Jenin that resulted in the death of seven Palestinians – including two minors – and more than 90 wounded. Just a day later, four Israelis were shot dead in an attack near the Eli settlement.
In this context, hundreds of settlers carried out attacks against various West Bank towns, events that resulted in the death of a Palestinian, while the Israeli Army killed three Palestinians – members of Islamic Jihad and the armed wing of Al Fatá. – in a drone strike near Jenin.
Both the drone attack and an attack carried out on Monday during the raid by an Apache helicopter after several soldiers were trapped in the area after a bomb exploded by their vehicle, were the first incidents of this type since the end of the Second Intifada nearly two decades ago.
Increased tensions in recent months have resulted in the deaths of around 175 Palestinians and 25 Israelis, amid fears of a widespread outbreak of violence. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “all options are open” amid calls within the government coalition for a large-scale operation in the West Bank.
