A wide-ranging operation was launched Thursday by the Salvadoran Attorney General’s Office to raid the headquarters of the country’s soccer federation, known by its acronym FESFUT, the court announced on its Twitter account.
The prosecution took as its starting point the complaint from the National Sports Institute of El Salvador for the alleged crimes of “fraudulent administration and money and asset laundering.”
The fiscal institution added that the FESFUT administration has committed such crimes from 2018 to 2022.
At the same time, a raid was carried out in the house of the president of the federation, Hugo Carrillo. One of the prosecutor’s officials later reported that “there is an unjustifiable increase in wealth” so they are now collecting information about it.
The national sports institute is chaired by Yamil Bukele, half-brother of President Nayib Bukele. All sports associations are under the coordination of the institute.
In January 2021, the former president of the FESFUT Reynaldo Vásquez was extradited to the United States for alleged crimes of money laundering and electronic fraud.
The national football body responded on its Twitter account that it continues to collaborate with the prosecution and displayed a letter sent by the International Football Federation (FIFA) who, after complaints from the Salvadoran sports management, urged it to comply with the independent administration of all matters related to the entity, without external interference, he said.
