Five civilians beheaded in an Al Shabaab attack in Kenya

June 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Five people have been beheaded this Saturday in an attack by Al Shabaab militants in the villages of Salama and Juhudi, in Lamu county, a Kenyan territory bordering Somalia.

The assailants, more than 30 armed men, arrived in the area around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, took people out of their homes, tied their hands and feet behind their backs and then executed them, according to the Kenyan newspaper ‘The Nation’.

All five victims are men, although the identity of only one of them has emerged, Barack Hussein, 19, a visiting high school student.

Lamu County Commissioner Louis Rono has confirmed the attack but has been unable to provide details. “I have heard that something has happened in Salama tonight. I am going to the place. I will give more details when I arrive”, he has pointed out.

A witness, Pamela Akoth Ogutu, has recounted that the attackers were armed with guns, machetes and knives and were wearing military clothing. They stole food, chickens and goats and then set fire to several houses.

In the same region, six people were killed and more than a dozen houses burned down in January 2022 in another attack by Al Shabaab militiamen. Last week two Kenyan soldiers died and several more were injured by the explosion of a bomb in front of their vehicle on the road between Witu and Pandanguo.
