US President Joe Biden spoke with the leaders of France, Germany and Britain on Saturday as mutinous Russian mercenaries headed toward Moscow after seizing a southern city overnight, the White House said.

“The leaders discussed the situation in Russia. They also affirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine,” indicated a short text.

Biden was briefed on the development of the situation in Russia by his national security team on Saturday morning, the White House said, adding that the president will continue to be briefed throughout the day.

A spokesman for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that during the talk, the four leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office made similar commitments on Ukraine, saying the leaders “agreed to remain in close contact in the coming days.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also spoke with his counterparts from the G7 nations.
