June 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior has reported this Saturday that it has prevented the travel of 25,519 people who intended to reach Europe irregularly in the first five months of 2023, which adds up to some 366,000 frustrated attempts in the last five years.

The report, collected by the official Moroccan news agency, MAP, states that in 2022 there were 70,781 attempts frustrated by the Moroccan authorities.

In addition, some 90,000 migrants have been rescued at sea in the last five years; 12,478 in 2022 and 3,150 in the first five months of 2023.

On the other hand, until the end of May, 117 criminal networks of migrant smuggling have been dismantled. In 2022 there were about 290 and about 1,500 in the last five years.

As for the attempts to jump the fence in Ceuta and Melilla, in the last five years a hundred attempts have been frustrated in which some 17,500 people have participated.

In 2022 alone there were 16 repelled attempts and only one attempt in the first five months of 2023 “thanks to the strengthening of the system to combat irregular migration”, the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior has highlighted.
