Authorities from the region, academics and specialists from the United Nations Organization (UN) and multilateral organizations will participate from June 27 to 29, 2023 in the Third Regional Seminar on Social Development: Promoting labor inclusion as a way to overcome the inequalities and informality in Latin America and the Caribbean that will be held at the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile.
The meeting -organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in collaboration with the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the German Cooperation and the Ford Foundation- aims to reflect on the promotion of labor inclusion policies to advance towards the reduction of gaps.
During the event, of a hybrid nature, the strategies and innovations that are being proposed in the field of labor policies will be discussed, as part of the transformative recovery with equality and sustainability in Latin America and the Caribbean. It seeks to highlight especially the successful experiences in the region.
The inaugural session, which will take place on Tuesday, June 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Chile (GMT-4), will include the participation of José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC (video); Gilbert Houngbo, Director General of the ILO (video); Fabio Bertranou, Director of the ILO Office for the Southern Cone of America; Jostein Leiro, Norwegian Ambassador to Chile; Volker Oel, Commissioner for Latin America of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany (virtual); and Javier Ciurlizza, Director of the Ford Foundation in the Andean Region.
The six panels of the event will address issues such as labor informality, child labor, labor inclusion of youth, the present and future of work, the development of skills for labor inclusion and the articulation between labor and social protection policies, among others.
The seminar also includes keynote presentations (in virtual format) by Alejandro Portes, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Princeton University, recipient of the Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences in 2019; Francisco HG Ferreira, Amartya Sen Professor of Inequality Studies and Director of the International Institute of Inequalities at the London School of Economics (LSE); and Glenda Quintini, OECD Senior Economist and Head of the Skills Team at the Employment, Labor and Social Affairs Directorate.
Similarly, on Tuesday 27, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., the book will be launched in a parallel event Inequalities, labor inclusion and future of work in Latin Americaprepared by ECLAC within the framework of an agreement with the FORD Foundation.
