More than 170 New Zealand students received scholarships to travel to Asia and Latin America

about 171 New Zealanders More than 14 groups will travel to Asia and Latin America over the next year for a life-changing experience abroad, Education Minister Jan Tinetti has announced.

“The Prime Minister’s Scholarships offer New Zealanders a fantastic international networking opportunity while learning and working abroad while sharing Aotearoa New Zealand with the world,” said Jan Tinetti.

Asian destinations include China, India, Thailand, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. As for Latin American destinations are Chile and Colombia.

“The scholarships are awarded to help the beneficiaries undertake a series of learning experiences, from internships, language courses and study exchanges”, explained Minister Tinetti.

They will carry out programs of study, research and internships in the areas of indigenous studies, sustainable development, entrepreneurship and health for six to nine weeks.

A second round of scholarships for individual applicants will open in August 2023. The program, which was launched in 2013, has had a total of 3,050 scholarship holders.

“I am delighted that interest in the program continues to grow, especially among our Maori communities. So far this year, at least 50% of the scholarships have been awarded to people with a Kaupapa Maori focus,” said Jan Tinetti.
