Political campaigns close in Guatemala for Sunday's elections

The candidates for the presidency of Guatemala rounded up their political campaigns this Friday on the last day allowed by law before Sunday’s elections.

The deadline for the campaigns ended at noon this Friday, 36 hours before the appointment to the polls for more than nine million Guatemalans. The last survey published by the newspaper Prensa Libre reflected three candidates as leaders in the intention to vote, all of them conservative.

In first place was former first lady Sandra Torres, from the UNE party, which offers social programs.

“The solidarity bag, my family progresses where we are going to give (money) to each mother of the family so that she can send her children to school, but also the security issue is very important,” promised the candidate

In second position is the candidate of the CABAL party, the former diplomat Edmond Mulet, who recently proposed reducing the number of deputies to Congress.

“A ceiling of 80 deputies is set in the Republic of Guatemala, which is more than enough to legislate and fulfill the function of approving laws and supporting the development of the country.”

Finally, Zury Ríos, from the VALOR Unionista coalition and daughter of the late ex-dictator Efraín Ríos Montt, stressed the protection of young people.

“We are going to work applying the law but also preventing our young people from being recruited by organized crime,” he said.

In total there are 22 candidates for the presidency, but some Guatemalans have not yet decided if they will go to vote.

“There is a lot of uncertainty for the simple reason that everyone offers and at the mere time, there is nothing anymore,” said voter Juan José Escalante.

Others, like Mariela Contreras, are already analyzing their vote. “We all have the right to choose and it would be good if together a good purpose for Guatemala is achieved.”

The delivery of ballot boxes is about to conclude, including the 158 that have already been sent to the United States for voting abroad that will take place in 15 North American cities.
