The death toll from the shipwreck off the coast of Greece rises to 82

June 20 () –

The Greek authorities have reported this Tuesday that the number of fatalities from the shipwreck that occurred almost a week ago off the coast of the city of Pylos, in the Peloponnese region (south) has risen to 82.

A Greek Coast Guard vessel that was on the high seas has found another body off the waters of Pylos and has transferred it to the port of Kalamata. The number of rescued remains at 104, as reported by the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’.

On the other hand, the nine Egyptian citizens who were arrested for human trafficking have been placed in pretrial detention after they appeared before a judge the day before in the framework of the shipwreck, with up to 700 people on board.

The Greek authorities maintain that the ship refused any type of help and maintained that it was not at risk until shortly before capsizing, but the data analyzed by the British channel BBC from the MarineTraffic portal seems to reveal navigation problems, amid the growing criticism of the Greek Coast Guard for its attitude during the incident.
