The Supreme Court of Belarus has ratified this Tuesday the sentence to 15 years in prison for the opposition member Svetlana Tijanovskaya, sentenced at the beginning of March of this year by a court in Minsk for the crime of “high treason against the State”.
The defense of the prominent opposition leader of the social protests against President Alexander Lukashenko after the 2020 elections, filed an appeal against the decision of the capital court, recalls the BelTA agency.
Tijanovskaya was convicted along with fellow opponent and former Minister of Culture Pavel Latushka and three other people linked to the alternative opposition council to Lukashenko. These four other convicts have not appealed their sentences.
The five opponents were convicted of “conspiring to seize power unconstitutionally”, leading an “extremist formation” and harming the national security of Belarus. Their sentences ranged from 12 to 18 years in prison.
