Indonesia to Host Two Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Regional Training Workshops

Indonesia will host two Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) regional training workshops, namely the East Asia Regional National Data Center Workshop (EARNW), which will be held from 18 to 22 September 2023 in Bali, and the Southeast Asia, Pacific and Far East Infrasound Workshop and Training (SEAPFE), which will take place in January 2024.

This was announced by the Deputy Head of Mission of the Indonesian Embassy in Vienna (Austria), A. Alfiano Tamala, during the opening session of the 60th Meeting of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission on June 12.

Both training workshops will be organized by the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) in cooperation with CTBTO.

Deputy Chief of Mission Alfiano Tamala also added that the Head of Indonesia’s BMKG will attend the Science and Technology Conference (Snt2023) to be held from June 19 to 23, 2023 in Vienna as one of the keynote speakers.

Indonesia also highlighted the importance of developing the Capacity Building Fund and its implementation, in particular to increase the participation of developing countries in online and offline training programmes.

He also stressed the importance of a balanced allocation of budgets for the three main CTBTO regimes, namely the International Monitoring System (IVS), the International Data Center (IDC) and on-site inspection.

Indonesia also highlighted the importance of developing the Capacity Building Fund and its implementation, in particular to increase the participation of developing countries.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is an international treaty that prohibits nuclear weapons testing, while the Preparatory Commission Meeting is the decision-making body of the CTBTO in relation to the reports of Working Group A, Working Group B and the Consultative Group.

Through the CTBTO, the Indonesian government demonstrates its commitment to promote the entry into force and universalization of the CTBT to achieve the goal of ending nuclear testing and eliminating nuclear weapons.
