BRUSSELS, June 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The European Union has announced this Thursday a commitment of 1,560 million euros in humanitarian aid for Syria within the framework of the donor conference organized in Brussels to mobilize the international community and in which it has reiterated its position of not recognizing the Syrian president , Bashar al Assad, and maintain the sanctions against his regime.
“We are the largest donor to the Syrian people. And this conference shows that, even in the 13th year of the conflict, we continue to support the Syrian people, regardless of what happens in our neighbourhood”, said the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy , Josep Borrell,
In this sense, it has announced a commitment worth 1,560 million to deal with the humanitarian situation that the Syrian people are going through. These funds will go to the Syrian communities in the country but also to support the Syrian communities in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan or Egypt.
THE EU MAINTAINS SANCTIONS AND RAPES WITH AL ASSAD
The head of diplomacy has defended that the EU has not changed its position regarding Syria, after the return of Al Assad to the international scene and the Arab League countries agreed to reintegrate Syria as a full member of the organization .
“We will not re-establish full diplomatic relations with the Assad regime, nor will we begin to work on reconstruction, until there is a genuine and complete political transition,” said Borrell, who stressed that as long as steps are not taken in this direction, the EU will maintain its sanctions against the regime.
And it has specified that the EU does not share the line of the Arab League, to insist that the position of the EU has not changed with respect to the Syrian regime, although it has clarified that this does not mean not exploring ways to improve the situation in the country after more than a decade of war.
