‘Star Wars: Outlaws’ is going to be sold as the first open world game in the franchise, and with well-deserved honors: if something is fascinating about the saga created by George Lucas, it is the perspective that the characters have a universe available before them that is never fully exploited. That’s why the ‘Star Wars’ movies are so varied: from the space operas to family adventures, through heist movies. All of this is ‘Star Wars’ in equal measure, and ‘Outlaws’ is going to try to take advantage of it.
UbiSoft and Massive Entertainment called on us after this year’s UbiSoft Forward to give us some extra details on its content, and we’ve discovered part of the focus of this ambitious story. To begin with, we already know what its exact chronology will be: between ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’, that is, a golden era for the franchise, with a classic starting point: the Empire at the zenith of its power. , and facing Rebels more virulent than ever, in a civil war that spans the entire galaxy.
It is at this moment that crime syndicates begin to flourish: the war economy favors everything from dealings to high-flying crimes, as well as corruption and confrontation with the forces of order. A perfect breeding ground for criminals to act as our two protagonists: Kay and her pet and only friend Nix.
It is inevitable to think of Han Solo with this characterization of the protagonist of ‘Outlaws’: a thief with (we assume) a good heart, accompanied by a pet of, yes, much smaller than Chewbacca. In any case, Kay will start as a petty criminal and will be able to rise in the organized crime underworld, accepting assignments and gaining a reputation that allows her to access increasingly lucrative and dangerous jobs.
Three items essential
According to Massive, ‘Outlaws’ stands on three key pillars. On the one hand, the cities, which we are assured will be full of life and opportunities to advance the game. And canteens, of course. On the other hand, absolutely huge open environments that will have to be explored. To do this we will have a speedstera vehicle that Massive says is inspired by motocross bikes, allowing it to do stunts and get Kay into skirmishes and chaseswith shootings like the one we have seen on gameplay that Ubi has presented.
Finally, we have outer space, which we have also tasted in the gameplay. Kay owns a ship, the Trailblazer, which allows her to leave the cities and flee into space, also often getting into gunfights and exchanging lasers with other ships, and which have all the flavor of the flying action sequences of ‘ Star Wars’.
All this for a setting that, added to the possibility that Kay enters a ‘Wanted’ state when it touches the Empire’s nose a lot, It has reminded us of a kind of galactic ‘GTA’ and for all audiences. It is obvious that no matter how much open world ‘Outlaws’ has, we will not be facing a sandbox Absolutely free like the Rockstar games, but the criminal setting, the use of vehicles and the persecution states of the protagonist have that clear precedent.
Finally, Massive has explained very briefly how to tackle the missions: as a good professional criminal, Kay will enter places stealthily, and she will be able to use Nix to help her in many ways: activating springs and pressing buttons from a distance or distracting enemies. If she is found out, she will not only put her life at risk, but she will lose Reputation points, making it difficult for her to rise in the underworld.
At the moment, everything we see in ‘Outlaws’ we like: of all the possible settings, the anti-heroic one of criminals and saloons is one of the most attractive, and the legendary era it portrays guarantees a setting with which we are familiar. Now to wait because there will be no Kay and Nix wanderings until 2024.
