The Islamabad Police have filed charges on Monday against the journalists ShahÃn Sehbai and Wayajat Said Jan, the ex-military and ‘youtuber’ Adil Raya and the presenter Syed Haider Raza Mehdi for “inciting rebellion” and encouraging people to attack military installations. throughout the country on May 9, when the leader of the Pakistan Tehrik and Insaf (PTI) party, Imran Jan, was arrested.
Several military installations suffered material damage during the protests, such as the residence of the commander of the Lahore military forces. Consequently, the police investigated the events and concluded that an officer saw between 20 and 25 people sharing “screenshots, tweets, videos and images” of Raya, Wayajat, Mehdi and Sehbai, reports the Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’.
“They were inciting people to attack military installations, spread terrorism and plunge the country into chaos,” said the agent signing the complaint, Muhammad Aslam.
Aslam himself explains that he checked the social media accounts of the four suspects after these incidents. “It was confirmed that all these people participated in a planned and previously agreed conspiracy to help anti-state organizations to defame the Armed Forces and try to provoke a mutiny in the Army,” he explained.
The four aspired to “wake up the enemy” and “foment terrorism” in the country through a “stupid speech” against the Army that “incited terrorism and spread fear.”
Jan was arrested on May 9 for a corruption case. However, the Pakistani Supreme Court ordered his release soon after, deeming the arrest “illegal”. Jan maintains that senior members of the Armed Forces are trying to prevent him from returning to power.
