Located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, and about 330 kilometers from Manila, Mount Mayon is spewing hot rocks. Philippine seismologists reported that there is already a record of at least one earthquake of volcanic origin.
First modification:
Faced with the danger of an eruption, the Philippine Civil Defense has evacuated some 13,000 people. “We are far from our home, but it is better to be here because it is very dangerous,” Rachel Ramirez, a 30-year-old woman with two children, told AFP who has been in a shelter set up in a school in Daraga for three days.
The evacuees, mainly inhabitants of agricultural villages at the foot of the volcano, were asked by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Junior to “follow all the recommendations and instructions of the local authorities.”
“There is a concomitant health risk of being close to the eruption due to inhalation of sulfur dioxide gases or particles from ash fallout,” Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said at a press conference on Sunday.
Five years ago, tens of thousands of people had to be evacuated by the eruption of Mount Mayón.
The most powerful eruption in recent decades was that of Pinatubo, in 1991. This eruption caused the death of more than 800 people and left an immense ash cloud in the sky that reached a dimension of thousands of kilometers.
