June 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Honduran Foreign Minister, Enrique Reina, and his Chinese counterpart, Qin Gang, have inaugurated the first Honduran embassy in China this Sunday, two months after both countries established their diplomatic relations, the Chinese channel CGTN has published.
The opening of the embassy coincided with the trip to China by the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, invited by her Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
The Honduran government resumed bilateral relations with China in March, for which reason it had to break its ties with Taiwan, in line with the requirements of the Chinese authorities, who consider the island a “rebel province.”
The rupture of relations between Honduras and Taiwan reduces to thirteen the number of countries that recognize the independence of the island. Since 2007, four other Latin American countries have cut ties with Taipei to establish relations with China (Costa Rica, in 2007; Panama, in 2017; El Salvador, in 2018; and Nicaragua, in 2021).
